abstract = "The sugarcane industry has grown significantly in recent years due
to bioenergy production. Sugarcane residues such as bagasse and
straw have contributed to cellulosic ethanol production as well
electricity. The objective of this paper is forecasting the straw
sugarcane yield of three varieties using NDVI time series of MODIS
sensor. The gross primary production (GPP) was calculated using
NDVI, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and light use
efficiency (LUE), for the 2015/16 crop year. The annual net
primary productivity (NPP), integrated throughout the development
period of sugarcane, was obtained from the difference between GPP
and sugarcane respiration. The carbon fraction in the sugarcane,
the crop moisture and the amount of biomass above the soil were
used according to literature data, as well as field data referring
to straw fraction and total biomass. The sugarcane straw yield
estimated values were compared among the varieties and analyzed in
relation to sugarcane straw yield measured on field. The yield
between varieties ranged from 13 to 22 t/ha. The use of NDVI time
series collaborated with the estimation of net primary
productivity of sugarcane. It was possible to note is a positive
correlation between the real values and the estimated values of
straw sugarcane yield in the blocks evaluated (Rē ~ 0,67). Further
analysis should be made regarding the use of light efficiency
parameters for biomass production in order to improve the
                         forecasting sugarcane straw yield.",
